What outside the obvious defines abundance for you? What makes you feel like you’ve got it all?
I’ve been wanting to ask you this question for awhile now because I have found some crazy things in my space that make me feel abundant.
Here’s mine, don’t laugh (well, go ahead and laugh, because I do,) mine is paper towels and toilet paper!
Yup, that’s what makes me feel safe and secure in my world is knowing that we have paper towels and toilet paper. When I can stock up on these two things, I feel like I’ve got it all.
I chuckle to myself just writing it.
But as I said, it got me thinking about what makes us feel safe and secure, outside of the obvious.
If you’ve been working with me for even a short period of time, you know ‘seeing’ something isn’t enough for me, I always want to understand where a picture or programming comes from, and paper towels and toilet paper as indicators of abundance, definitely called for some digging to understand what is behind that?!
So here’s what I saw – When I was little my mother stocked up on paper towels and toilet paper when it was on sale, whether we needed it or not. It was the idea that it was on sale, and she could never pass up a good deal. In our two car garage, there was no room for cars. We had bikes and lawnmowers and lawn furniture and a mountain of paper towels and toilet paper. We never ran out, yet we were always stocking up. We’d drive all over the city going to stores that had paper towels and toilet paper on sale. Saturday mornings, we’d go down to a distributor and pack the brown-paneled station wagon with our treasure. I can remember feeling a sense of excitement when we’d find a good deal or when the car would be so full. In our house, no one was ever running around looking for a tissue because the toilet paper roll was empty; we had more than enough. In fact, my mom recently sold the house and we helped her move and yes, the mountain was still there. I brought back with me a carload of paper towels and toilet paper. You can imagine my glee and yes, I felt so safe and secure.
Of course, this programming about paper towels and toilet paper had a ripple effect on how I moved through my life, my ability to create and manifest for myself and my idea of what abundance is and it’s a great example of how we can miss what impacts our ability to create a life we love. Because for me, if paper towels and toilet paper aren’t on sale and aren’t fully stock, somewhere a quiet voice was always saying, ‘you don’t have enough.’
And that’s why I wanted to ask you to share with me what in your life (again outside of the obvious – the obvious being money, a job, a roof over your head) makes you feel safe and secure? Take some time to really think about. Is it a need for shoes? or certain kinds of food? or pencils? or make-up? Dig a little and let me know what you find.
May you always love your life!
